Thousands of Jats from Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Delhi and Punjab held a massive protest march today at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. Most of the roads leading to Jantar Mantar and neighboring areas were choked during the time of the protest, which caused great discomfort to many commuters. Police personnel were deployed in huge numbers to ease traffic congestion and avoid any untoward incident cause by the protesters.
The Jats are protesting for their demands, which include reservation in jobs and education. Jat leaders have threatened to intensify their protest post Holi, if the government does not agree to their demands. Yashpal Malik, the president of the All India Jat Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti (AIJASS), said that five million Jats from all over the country will converge in Delhi after Holi and bring along their tractors and cattle to press for their demands. Malik also said that farmers will stop supplying milk to the National Capital Region (NCR), if their demands are not met. He added that they have already stopped supplying milk to government owned plants and agencies.
“We have seven demands and the government should fulfill them. We want reservations for our community in jobs and education institutions. Haryana government should immediately withdraw pending cases against our people. Others who were injured during previous protest should be given compensation and the government should give a job to a family member of the deceased,” Mailk said.
