Jelena Ostapenko wins the French Open – 2017

French Open 2017 saw a new Women’s Champion. The tournament has always caused an upset to top seeds every now and then both in Men’s and Women’s championships since it is played in the hard court. The Women’s Finals which concluded yesterday saw a new Champion altogether. It was Jelena Ostapenko this time.

The tournament saw some of the big names participating except the exception of Serena Williams who is now pregnant and has been advised to skip few tournaments over the coming months. Her sister Venus Williams did take part but was defeated so as other big names.

Finally, it was Simona Halep and Jelena Ostapenko who reached the finals. Though Simona Halep was expecte to win and was the favourite, she did manage to win the first set easily by 4-6. The Championship would have also steered her to World No.1 ranking but destiny had it otherwise. Jelena recovered from the early loss and played ferociously which saw her win the next two sets comfortably by 6-4, 6-3.

This is the first Slam for Jelena who looked visibly elated during the award ceremony. She also received wishes on social media from top tennis players – both from Men and Women.
