Even as competitors are already reeling with the free voice and dirt cheap data plans offered by Reliance Jio, the company is all set to make yet another major move that would create even more trouble for the rest of telecom operators. Jio has started to reach saturation in terms of customers who have 4G enabled smartphones, and to overcome this, Jio is planning to launch 4G VoLTE feature phones that would be priced at just Rs 500. With this new phone, Jio will be able to target a large customer base that use feature phones. This is expected to create another wave of disruption in the telecom market. Sources said that the launch of the Rs 500 4G VoLTE feature phones could be announced as early as July 21, during the annual general meeting of parent company Reliance Industries.
Sources have also revealed that Jio has already placed orders for around 18-20 million 4G VoLTE feature phones and shipments could start arriving in July. With a price tag of Rs 500, each of these phones will be subsidized to the tune of nearly Rs 650-975. Jio is also likely to announce new plans to go with these 4G feature phones.
