A group of JNU students ‘burnt’ effigies of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah to represent the demon king Ravan on Dussera night.
The alleged act of burning effigy of Modi and Shah as Ravan were carried out by members of Congress-affiliated National Student’ Union of Inda (NSUI) on Wednesday night near Saraswati Dhaba within the campus.
The group of students who carried out the representative burning of senior political leaders claimed that they took the occasion of Dussera to raise their protest against the BJP-run government.
According to some of the leaders said that it was a protest against the Centre’s “failure” to honour the promises made and attack on various educational institutions across the country.
The section of JNU students also burnt effigies having face of Yog guru Ramdev, Sadhvi Pragya, JNU vice-chacelloer Jagadesh Kumar, Nathuram Gadse and Asaram Bapu.
The students participating in the representative-burning also carried placards with slogan “Truth shall prevail over ever.”
Sunny Diman, a NSUI activist said, “We event was to symbolise our dissatisfaction with the current government. It has been performed to pull out evil from the governance and bring about a system that is pro-student and for the people.”
He added that the current organisation has attacked the students through various means when students raised their voice for legitimate demands.
College officials denied talking on the matter and only said an inquiry will be set and actions will be taken accordingly.
