Jawaharlal Nehru University administration has withdrawn the private security cover provided to Kanhaiya Kumar, students’ union president. A notice has been sent to Kumar by the University stating that the security will only be continued only after a dues adding to Rs 5lakhs are paid.
A JNU official not authorized to talk to the media on condition of anonymity said, “The decision was taken by the university as the cost towards personal security of a single person.”
The official added that chief security officer withdrew Kumar’s security cover on Thursday midnightafter he received letter from the vice-chancellor regarding removal of Kumar’s security. The JNUSU president still has three Delhi Police personnel for his security.
Kumar was provided with security cover from the Delhi Police on the directions given by the High Court after Kumar’s arrest and subsequent bail in the sedition case lodged against him.
Kumar soon after the provision had written to the JNU vice-chancellor that he did not want Delhi Police personnel inside the university campus. Soon after the JNU administration had engaged four security-guards of Group4. The four security guards accompany Kumar everywhere within the campus.
The university took the decision to withdraw Kumar’s security cover after JNUSU joint security Saurabh Kumar wrote to the vice-chancellor requesting personal security as his life was under threat. The letter states that Kumar had been provided security by the Delhi Police on orders of the High Court.
A senior police officer from the Delhi Police told the media that department has deputed three policemen 24*7 to provide security for the JNUSU president irrespective of his location as per the High Court’s directive.
