Justice JS Khehar first Sikh to take over as the 44th Chief Justice of India on Wednesday morning after succeeding Justice TS Thak
ur, whose 13-month tenure ended on Tuesday. He will hold the post for the next seven months.
Justice JS Khehar was administered the oath by President Pranab Mukherjee. His appoitment was cleared by the president. However his elevation as the CJI was challenged with three petitions before the Suprme Court.
Supreme Court bench dismissed all the three petitions latest on Tuesday saying “curtain should be brought down” on the controversy.
Justice Khehar in his career has delivered several high-profile judgments since he became a Supreme Court judge. As a judge he was part of the bench that jailed Sahara chief Subrata Roy for flouting the order to refund money his company.
He had also headed the bench that ordered status quo ante in Arunachal Pradesh, reviving the Congress government last year.
As a lawyer he had handled important assignments including defending Justice V Ramaswami, a Judge of the Supreme Court, who was accused of corruption as the chief justice of Punjab and Haryana high court.
