Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has launched the KCR kit, which seeks to ensure the welfare of pregnant women and newborns. The term KCR has been derived from the short form of the Chief Minister’s name – K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR). It has been named as such since the project is very close to the heart of the Telangana Chief Minister. Government officials said that the KCR kit will contribute significantly towards reducing Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) and Mother Mortality Rate (MMR) in the state. The kit will also be beneficial for poor households who often do not have the resources to provide for the needs of pregnant women and newborns.
The KCR kit project has been launched at a cost of Rs 605 crore. The kit will contain various items for the mother and the baby such as clothes, baby soap, baby oil, toys, baby powder, diapers, napkins, mosquito nets, etc. The overall cost of these items is Rs 2,000. Mothers who give birth to bay girl will receive Rs 13,000 in their bank account and in case of baby boy, Rs 12,000 will be transferred. The money will be transferred in 4 equal installments. However, the scheme is only applicable to women who give birth in government hospitals. It will be applicable for two deliveries only.
“The idea is to encourage more and more deliveries in government hospitals, reduce the infant mortality rate and female feticide. This is an affectionate gift given by the government to mother and child,” Rao said.
