Charges of stalking and rape have been invoked against Kovalam’s Congress MLA M Vincent, who was earlier booked by the police after a woman tried to commit suicide. The woman was allegedly harassed by Vincent, due to which she had attempted to commit suicide. The police invoked 376 and 354(d) of the IPC against Vincent, after the 51-year old woman gave her statement to the police yesterday. The woman had tried to commit suicide by consuming a large number of sleeping pills. The woman’s husband said that she took the extreme step since Vincent used to harass her over phone. He said that Vincent had even threatened his wife.
Since the case has become politically sensitive, Kollam city police commissioner S Ajeetha Begum was appointed by the state government to be the investigating officer in the case. The commissioner visited the hospital and recorded the woman’s statement. Meanwhile, an audio clip has surfaced, which allegedly has telephonic conversation between Vincent and the victim’s brother. The audio clip conversations involve discussions about amicably settling the issue. The commissioner said that the audio clip has been sent for further examination. However, Vincent has denied the allegations and said that all of this is a political conspiracy.
