The central government feverish search for a suitable candidate for the post of Attorney General may have ended after sources revealed that senior lawyer and constitutional expert KK Venugopal has been selected for the post. Sources revealed that Venugopal’s name has already been approved by President Pranab Mukherjee. However, a formal announcement regarding Venugopal’s appointment as the Attorney General of India still needs to be made by the central government. It may be recalled that Venugopal came into the picture after earlier Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi told the government that he was not interested in continuing for another term.
Venugopal has more than 50 years of experience in legal matters. He had also appeared as the lawyer for LK Advani in the Babri Masjid demolition case at the Supreme Court. Venugopal is known for his calm style and attention to detail. Venugopal is considered an authority on constitutional law. The central government would look forward to his expertise, as it has to fight a wide variety of important legal battles such as those related to cow slaughter, notification on cattle sale, Aadhaar linking, triple talaq, etc.
