The Kolkata police arrested several BJP leaders after protests turned violent in the city. Several areas in central Kolkata were affected, as security forces used water cannons and tear gas shells to control the protesting crowd. The BJP leaders who were arrested include Kailash Vijayvargiya, state BJP chief Dilip Ghosh, party MP Rupa Ganguly and former Kolkata Deputy Mayor Meena Devi Purohit. It is alleged that these people were arrested since the crowd they were leading had broken the barricades surrounding the city police headquarters at Lalbazar. It has also been reported that the city police used drones to keep the crowd in control.
BJP leader Rupa Ganguli fell ill, as she was scuffling and jostling with the security forces. Another leader named Locket Chatterjee had to be admitted to hospital for similar reasons. The police alleged that the protestors threw bombs at them, which prompted them to take strict action against the protestors. However, this has been denied by BJP National Secretary Rahul Sinha. “Police are trying to mislead everybody by claiming bombs were hurled, while actually it was only the sound of tear gas shells lobbed by the police,” said Sinha.
