Major Nitin Gogoi, who was earlier alleged to be involved in tying a Kashmiri youth to an army jeep to be used as a shield against stone pelters, has been awarded by Army Chief General Bipin Rawat. Major Gogoi has received a COAS (Chief of Army Staff) commendation honoring his sustained efforts in carrying out counter-insurgency operations. Ironically, this comes just a week after the Army Chief had denied that the person involved in the incident has been let off by the Court of Inquiry.
It may be recalled that the video of Kashmiri youth tied to the jeep and being used as a shield against stone pelters had gone viral on social media. It has attracted a mixed response from users, with some condemning the act whereas others saying that it was a great idea and stone pelters deserve such treatment for creating law and order problem in the Kashmir valley. Following the incident, an FIR was lodged by the Jammu & Kashmir police. The Indian Army had also formed a Court of Inquiry to investigate the incident.
