An intelligence officer deployed in Jharkhand’s Gumla district was shot dead by suspected CPI-Maoist rebels in the wee hours of Tuesday.
The deceased officer has been identified as Badrinath Tiwari.
Chainpur police station officer-in-charge told the media that that Tiwari was part of the special branch – intelligence department of the Jharkhand Police.
He added that Tiwari was abducted by armed rebels late Monday or early Tuesday from his residence in Nawatoli village under the Chainpur police station area.
According to Nawatoli villagers, Tiwari, who lived with his family and gathered intelligence on Maoist activities in the region.
The villager added that his body was sighted by the villagers early Tuesday morning when they were on their way for defecation. “Yesterday night around 20-25 armed abductors abducted Tiwari from his house and were shouting slogans in favor of CPI-Maoist.”
“Several rounds of bullet firing were heard few hours after the abduction,” added another villager.
A pamphlet was found near the body of the slain officer warning police informers of dire consequences.
“The Maoists had no idea the deceased was a police officer. They believed him to be a police informer,” said a senior police officer not authorized to talk to the media to News Patrolling.
