Maratha Morcha brings Mumbai traffic to a standstill

Half a million Marathas will be gathering at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan for the 58th Maratha Kranti Morcha or “Muka Morcha” (silent march) to ask for reservations for the community. The silent March will be commencing today from  11 am and go on until 5 pm.

The event is expected to bring the traffic guzzled Mumbai roads to a standstill due to the huge volumes of people who would be participating in the march to cement their reservation specially in the Job and Education. Lot of them have already started to gather at BMC’s Jijamata Udyan in Mumbai’s Byculla from where the rally will begin and go on to Azad Maidan in south Mumbai.

The JJ flyover will be closed for traffic in view of the morcha and so as the schools in South Mumbai for precautionary measures, police said.

In view of this massive march, various facilities including mobile toilets, drinking water facilities and medical cams have been set up to facilitate the smooth flow of march. Ambulances have also be deployed by the JJ Hospital and a ward with 25 beds have been kept on stand-by in case of any emergency. Even the private hospitals have been asked to be ready.

Since the people would be joining others through bus and train, the traffic has already come to a standstill. The BMC has razed a railing of Azad Maidan to create a wider entrance apart from merging the venue with a much spacious Bombay Gymkhana ground so that more space can be created to accommodate all the participants.
