As the severe pollution levels in Delhi refuse to tone down and as leaving Delhi may not be possible for everyone, many people are trying to deal with the situation by wearing masks and using air purifiers. The pollution in Delhi has reached a staggering 70 times that of the safe levels mandated by the World Health Organization (WHO). Such high levels of air pollution should not be taken lightly, since it can lead to various diseases including cancer and heart diseases. Now, doctors are advising people to use the N90 masks in order to protect themselves from the severe air pollution. As per a study conducted by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), various factors such as reduced wind speed, relative humidity, cooler temperatures, and atmospheric boundary layer have led to the severe pollution levels in Delhi.
Doctors are saying that the air pollution in Delhi comprises various chemicals and visible and invisible physical matter. These irritate the nose, throat and sinuses and get lodged deep inside the lungs. Overtime, these chemicals and particles can cause various diseases. This is why N90 masks are being recommended by doctors. N90 masks are designed to keep out the harmful PM 2.5 particles. Doctors are also advising people to stay indoors and have a nutritious diet comprising fruits and vegetables. High protein content foods are also being recommended, as it can help boost immunity.
Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the high pollution levels in Delhi and has sent notices to the Centre and the governments of Delhi, Punjab and Haryana. The NHRC has asserted that both center and state governments have failed to control pollution, which is a violation of the right to life and health of Delhi residents.
