The Supreme Court’s order banning the sale and registration of BS-III vehicles from April 1 has prompted an interesting new development. Left with no other option, but to liquidate their huge stock of around 6.71 lakh BS-III vehicles, most two-wheeler companies including Hero MotoCorp, HMSI, Bajaj Auto, and Suzuki have started offering steep discounts on these vehicles. Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) is offering discount of Rs 22,000; Hero MotoCorp is offering discounts of up to Rs 12,500; Bajaj Auto is offering discounts in the range of Rs 3,000 to Rs 12,000 along with free insurance; and Suzuki is offering discounts of Rs 4000 to Rs 5000 along with some free gifts.
These companies also plan to focus on exporting the vehicles that will be affected by the ban imposed by Supreme Court, in case they remain unsold till end of March 31. It may be recalled that the Supreme Court has imposed the ban saying that people’s health is far more important than the commercial concerns of manufacturers. The court also noted that ample time was provided to vehicle manufacturers, but they failed to comply.
