After much deliberation and discussions, Congress-led opposition has chosen Meira Kumar as the Presidential candidate. With this decision, the battle between Ram Nath Kovind and Meira Kumar is all set to take place. It has also made it clear now that Presidential elections will now have to be conducted by the Election Commission (EC). The decision to choose Meira Kumar as the Presidential candidate was chosen after a long meeting hosted by Congress President Sonia Gandhi. The meeting was attended by various other opposition parties such as NCP, RJD, National Conference, DMK, JD-S, RSP, JMM, Kerala Congress, IUML and the AIUDF of Assam.
Meira Kumar entered politics in 1985 when she joined the Congress party. She has been a Lok Sabha MP for 5 terms and she had also been a Lok Sabha Speaker. She is the daughter of Babu Jagjivan Ram, who was a freedom fighter, a prominent Dalit rights activist, and former deputy prime minister. As compared to NDA’s candidate Ram Nath Kovind, Meira Kumar is more widely known among the masses. Meanwhile, JD (U)’s Nitish Kumar said that the party will continue to support Kovind, even when Meira Kumar is from Bihar.
