Meira Kumar is yet in the news again. Earlier, it was for losing the Presidential Election to Ramnath Kovind y more than 50% and now, the Congress has decided to field senior party leader P Bhattacharya as the party’s candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections instead of Meira Kumar.
The West Bengal Congress leadership had urged the party high command to consider Kumar as a candidate for the RS elections in the state. Kumar also had the support from the Left and the ruling Trinamool Congress with WBPCC president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury meeting the party’s leadership in New Delhi to discuss the probable name of its candidate for the Rajya Sabha poll in West Bengal.
The polls are set to take place in August for six RS seats. Four of them are held by TMC, one by CPI(M) and one by Congress. It is to be noted here that Congress had decided to extend its full support to CPI(M) with the only condition that the candidate has to be its
general secretary Sitaram Yechury but the idea has not gone own well with the CPI(M) leadership which is not considering echury to be nominated as a MP for the third time.
With TMC increasing its strength after the 2016 assembly polls, it can not send five MPs instead of 4 and Congress one.The party which is on the losing side is the CPI(M). Out of 43 MLA votes required to nominate a RS MP, CPI(M) only has 32 MLAs where Congress has 4 and TMC leading the pack with 211 MLAs.
