Argentinian Lionel Messi who has appealed in the Spanish Supreme Court against the conviction in a tax case was in a shock when the Supreme Court rejected his claim and confirmed the order passed by the lower court. It has however reduced the sentence for his father from 24 Months to 15 months since Messi has paid up the money to the tax authorities.
The case is with regards to evasion of tax between 2007-2009 when he entered into deals with Danone, Adidas, Pepsi- Cola, Procter & Gamble and the Kuwait Food Company whose income were not accounted.
Earlier Messi argued that he did not knew nothing about his finances as he entrusted his father to look after them. As per Spanish Law, the first time offenders need not have to compulsorily serve the sentence.
A court statement said Messi “unequivocally understood his obligation to pay tax on income obtained from exploiting his image rights…therefore it is not logical that he should ignore his duty to pay tax on them”.
The judgement by the Supreme Court has brought a closure to this case which has been pending since 2013.
