Congress is already reeling under the recent exit of its top Gujarat leader Shankersinh Vaghela and now it has gotten itself into more trouble, as three of its top legislators have quit and joined the BJP. Political pundits said that this may be a well-thought of plan by Shankersinh Vaghela, which is now taking shape. One of the legislators who has quit Congress and joined BJP is Balwantsinh Rajput. When he was with the Congress, he was the chief whip of Congress in the assembly. Rajput is a close relative of Vaghela, which explains that all of these may have been planned before. Sources said that Rajput will most likely file his nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections to be held in Gujarat in August. Rajput is likely to be fielded against Congress leader Ahmed Patel.
The BJP wants to defeat Ahmed Patel and it is trying its best to achieve that goal. Ahmed Patel is a political advisor to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and if the BJP can defeat Patel, it would be able to cause a major embarrassment to the Congress. Patel’s defeat would be significant since Gujarat assembly elections are to be held later this year. Patel’s defeat will demoralize party workers and leaders, something that would be beneficial for BJP and allies. It may be recalled that BJP is aiming to win 150 of the 183 seats in Gujarat during the state assembly elections.
