As per data available with the Election Commission of India, Goa has registered the largest number of NOTA voters in the recently concluded assembly elections. NOTA stands for “None of the Above”, a choice provided to people in case they feel that none of the candidates is worthy of candidature. When the Election Commission analyzed data from the assembly elections held in five states – UP, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur, it found that Goa had the largest number of NOTA voters in percentage terms.
In Goa, the percentage of people who chose NOTA was 1.2 percent of the overall eligible voters. At second spot was Uttarakhand, where 1 percent of eligible voters chose NOTA. In Uttar Pradesh, where BJP has registered a massive victory, the NOTA percentage was 0.9 percent. This was followed by Punjab, where the NOTA percentage was 0.7 percent. The least NOTA percentage was in Manipur at 0.5 percent.
In recent years, it has been noticed that more and more people are choosing the NOTA option. One reason is the increased awareness about NOTA. It is also that some people just don’t want to cast their vote for undeserving candidates or those with a criminal background.
