Thousands come and go, and yet only a few manage to achieve something substantial in life. There are certain commonalities that these select few share, which includes things like true grit, determination, perseverance, discipline, and a single minded focus to achieve one’s goals. MS Dhoni: The Untold Story is a biopic of one such great personality, who overcame great odds in his life to become one of India’s greatest cricketers ever. The movie is also an ode to the family, friends and well-wishers of MS Dhoni, who were there with him all throughout, both in his successes and failures in life.

Coming from a middle-class background, MS Dhoni faced the possibility of being influenced by the comforts of job security. However, he had always wanted to do something more in life, which eventually propelled him to walk the path of a cricketing legend. Yes, there were several obstacles in the way, but Dhoni’s ‘never give up’ attitude helped him overcome his problems and keep moving towards his goal.

The movie clicks, firstly because Sushant Singh Rajput, who plays MS Dhoni, has done a wonderful job. Sushant has understood the character at its core, and has effectively captured the mannerism, without appearing overdramatic. MS Dhoni’s restrained and stoic nature, the essential characteristics of any great captain, has been beautifully portrayed by Sushant. Credit also goes to director Neeraj Pandey, who has successfully recreated Dhoni’s early life in Ranchi, capital of the Indian state of Jharkhand. The scenes, filmed at actual locations, make the movie realistic and relatable.

MS Dhoni: The Untold Story does not delve into the negative aspects of the cricketer’s life, which may be a disappointment for people who like to see the complete picture. However, that should not deter Dhoni fans from loving him. The movie is a must watch for all Dhoni fans and cricket aficionados.
