“Don’t let anyone kill your spirit” is the central theme and the core message that movie Neerja tries to convey to the audience. That life’s purpose may not always be to live long; that it can be short, yet lived with courage and compassion. Neerja is based on the real life story of the courageous Neerja Bhanot, who single-handedly prevented a hijack attempt and sacrificed her life to save the lives of passengers of the ill-fated Pan Am flight 73.
Neerja (Sonam) is the daughter of Rama (Shabana) and journalist-father Harish (Yogendra Tiku). She is the youngest member of the family that also has two elder brothers. A high-spirited individual, full of love and compassion, she is endearingly called laddo (loved one) by her parents. Even when she had just been through a bad marriage, she has not lost her courage, and is aware that every individual is different. Then one day, as if fate was trying to test her courage even further, she happened to be on Pan Am flight 73, which was hijacked by Libyan terrorists when it made its regular halt at Karachi. Here also, when faced with gun-`n’-grenade toting men, Neerja does not lose her cool and takes critical, courageous decisions that help prevent further deterioration of the situation and save lives of many passengers on board.
Although most of us know what the story is all about, the movie has come out to be highly engaging and riveting, thanks to the deft story-telling skills of director Ram Madhvani. Sonam has also done a great job and this is probably one of her best performances ever. The scenes are so well orchestrated that you are likely to weep and mourn as well as acknowledge the bravery and courage that surrounds Neerja’s life. You are likely to agree that even when the world is filled with hatred and violence, there are still a few among us who have the courage to turn the tide in face of adversity.
Neerja commemorates the indomitable spirit of Neerja Bhanot and salutes her bravery and courage. This one’s a definite must watch.
