Featuring complex characterization and exceptional casting choices, A Ship of Fools is definitely worth more than a single watch. Set in the 1930s, this movie showcases an intricate plot that follows the lives of a number of couples aboard a cruise ship. The idiosyncrasies of the characters are a fitting match for the thrills that a cruise has to offer, with a political activist, a young love-struck duo, a stubborn cruise ship doctor and a narcissistic baseball player- all aboard the same vessel. Michael Dunn’s inspiring performance also won him a nomination for an Academy Award.
2. Out to Sea
This 1997 romantic comedy starred Walter Matthau, Jack Lemmon, Rue McClanahan and Dyan Cannon amongst others. The light-hearted story, featuring a compulsive gambler who also happens to be a bumbling fool, is set against the backdrop of a cruise ship, making it a delight to watch. Martha Coolidge’s stellar direction has kept many audiences hooked to every scene of the movie, as Charlie Gordon goes about trying to achieve some control over his own life. After gambling all his money away and running into a massive debt, Charlie’s great solution is to escape the loan sharks by tricking his brother in-law. Any nostalgic list of famous movies featuring cruise ships is incomplete without a mention of Titanic. This 1997 hit was showered with both critical and commercial success, being nominated for fourteen Academy Awards and winning eleven of them. Truly deserving of its status as a masterpiece, the movie heart-wrenchingly plays out the story of the ill-fated Titanic ship, with spectacular performances by Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. More than anything else, this cinematic treat did a fine job of displaying the opulence of the cruise liner- including stately ballrooms, elegant dining chambers and the sunbathed deck. The epic romantic-disaster film can and has been watched an infinite number of times by moviegoers of all ages and has been the inspiration for many to embark on a luxurious cruise holiday.
4. Dil Dhadakne Do
Few directors are as phenomenally talented as Zoya Akhtar and this is evidenced yet again by her decision to shoot the movie Dil Dhadakne Do exclusively on cruise ships. The multi-starrer project features the story of a dysfunctional Punjabi family who invite their family and friends along on a cruise trip to celebrate the parents’ 30th wedding anniversary. What follows makes for a brilliant comedy-drama plot, with extraordinary performances. Shot across the Mediterranean Sea, the film features several exotic locations that have made for a fitting canvas for the rollercoaster plot. This movie clearly put cruise vacations on the bucket list of many Indians with its sophisticated depiction of how picturesque such holidays can be and how ideal a cruise ship is for grand celebrations.
Starring Amisha Patel, Bobby Deol and Akshaye Khanna, Humraaz received several nominations for Filmfare Awards and continues to be a popular movie that Bollywood fans return to. A major portion of the movie was shot on a cruise with the tumultuous waves being a perfect setting for this tale of unmitigated greed, destructive ambition and a complex love triangle. The 2002 romantic thriller may have been inspired from Dial M for Murder, but was original in terms of its intense screenplay and intriguing plot.
