In wake of the violent protests by farmers in Mandsaur district of Madhya Pradesh, the state government has launched a new debt relief scheme to pacify agitating farmers. It may be recalled that the farmers in Mandsaur are protesting to get their loans waived off and to set up an institutional structure that could guarantee higher prices for their produce. In response to the demands of the farmers, the state government has launched a new scheme named Krishi Rin Samadhan Yojana for farmers. An amount of Rs 1,000 crore has already been allocated to the new scheme. The information about the new scheme was provided by minister Archana Chitnis.
Under the new scheme, farmers would have to pay less interest as compared to prevailing rates. This would be a great help to farmers who are on the verge of defaulting on their loan payments. Experts said that the government is trying to control the situation since it appears to have gone out of control, especially after six farmers were killed in police firing. The police have not accepted any wrongdoing on their part, but a judicial probe has already been ordered to investigate the matter. Curfew has been imposed in Mandasur, Ratlam and Ujjain and internet services have been taken down as well.
