With unanimous support of 42 out of 49 legislators, ruling Naga People’s Front (NPF) chief Shurhozelie Liezietsu is slated to become the new Chief Minister of Nagaland. Liezietsu has been appointed as the legislature party’s leader by the legislators. The move is aimed at resolving the deadlock between the government and the various agitating groups that have been demanding the resignation of current Chief Minister T R Zeliang. The protestors are angry at Zeliang’s decision to conduct the municipal elections with 33% seats reserved for women. According to protestors, it is against the local culture and tradition for women to participate in politics.
The government has made consistent efforts to find a resolution, but the protestors have refused to take back their demands. The move to appoint Liezietsu as the new Chief Minister of Nagaland will help restore normalcy in the State and avoid the possibility of President’s rule in the State. Soon after Liezietsu was appointed as the Legislature party’s leader, Governor P.B. Acharya and Zeliang left for Delhi to discuss the emerging possibilities in the State with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
It may be recalled that the protestors have given the deadline of February 17 for the resignation of Zeliang. They have said that if Zeliang does not step down by February 17, they would carry out massive protests throughout the State.
