Neelam Sonkar

Neelam Sonkar is an Indian politician and a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Lok Sabha constituency of Lalganj in the state of Uttar Pradesh. She is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In the 2014 assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Neelam Sonkar defeated her nearest rival Bechai Saroj of Samajwadi Party (SP) by a margin of more than sixty thousand votes. Throughouther political career, Neelam Sonkar has focused on empowering women through a wide variety of educational programs. She has been associated with various social welfare projects that seek to achieve gender equality, create employment opportunities and eradicate malnutrition among women and children.

Early Life and Education

Neelam Sonkar was born on February 11, 1973 to Shri Ramchandra and Smt. Bhagyvani Devi. She was born in Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh. Neelam Sonkar has completed her Masters in Arts (MA) from Gorakhpur University. She got married to Shri Rajendra Prasad on December 10, 1993.

  • 2014: Member, Consultative Committee, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and Shipping
  • 1 Sep. 2016 onwards: Member, Standing Committee on Human Resource Development
