Economist Dr Rajiv Kumar has been named as the new vice chairman of NITI Aayog after Arvind Panagariya has announced his retirement five days ago to pursue his interests in academics.
Dr Kumar holds a DPhil in economics from the prestigious Oxford University and a PhD from Lucknow University. Initially he held the position of Secretary General of the FICCI and has also served in the position of Director and Chief Executive of the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER). apart from being the member of National Security Advisory Board between 2006 to 2008. He is currently a senior fellow at the Centre for Policy Research (CPR).
Dr Kumar also has other credentials which includes serving as chief economist of the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), Senior position in Asian Development Bank(ADB), Indian Ministry of Industries and Ministry of Finance apart from being a member King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center in Riyadh, the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and Asia in Jakarta, the State Bank of India, and the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade.
The government also appointed Dr Vinod Paul, a pediatrician at the AIIMS, as a member of the NITI Aayog. The appointments were made since Panagariya has announced that 31st August would be his last date in NITI Aayog and that he would be returning to Columbia University.
