Russian President Vladimir Putin said today that the ongoing standoff between belligerent North Korea and the United States could lead to large-scale conflict. Putin said that the situation has reached the edge and it could escalate into a large-scale conflict anytime. Putin also targeted the United States, saying that it should not have put pressure on North Korea to dismantle its nuclear missile program. The pressure has had just the opposite effect of what the United States was aiming for. Despite the continuous warnings by the US, North Korea doesn’t seem to be even a bit worried about the consequences of its actions. Just a few days back, North Korea had fired a ballistic missile over the Japanese territory.
Aiming to provide a solution to the problem, Putin said that if he was in charge, he would have negotiated with North Korea rather than threaten the rogue country. “It is essential to resolve the region’s problems through direct dialogue involving all sides without advancing any preconditions,” Putin said. Putin said that history is proof that things like pressure and provocation seldom lead to resolution of problems. Putin said that the situation in the Korean peninsula has deteriorated beyond anyone’s imagination and things could get worse. North Korea refuses to change its ways since it essentially has nothing to lose.
