World No.2 and 6 time Australian open champion Novak Djokovic was defeated in a shock upset by 117th ranked Denis Istomin at the Australian Open today. The match which the wild card entry won was a 5 set thriller with the scores being 7-6 (10-8), 5-7, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5) and 6-4.
Denis Istomin had so far won only one single’s title to his name – the Nottingham Open, a grass court tournament. Istomin was forced to play the Asia Pacific wildcard tournament, just to be able to play in the Australian Open after dropping out of the top 100 rankings of ATP. He had had a very bad 2016, due to a lot of injuries that forced him out of the top 100 players of the ATP ranking.
By defeating Novak Djokovic, Denis Istomin has made it easier for the current World number 1, British Andy Murray to win the Australian Open for the first time in his career.
Denis Istomin said that it was atough victory for him as his leg muscles got cramps in the thirs set and he had to play with that.
With a 7th Australian open, Novak Djokovic would have been the first person to win 7 Austalian Opens ever. Currently he is tied with Australian Roy Emerson, who like Djokovic has won
