Malcolm Turnbull lead Australian Govt is in a fix since their Deputy PM Barnaby Joyce seems to be holding the citizenship of New Zealand as well. According to the Australian constitution, dual citizenship is not permitted for those who would want to contest for the public office.
Mr Joyce who himself is not clear about his citizenship status said that he may have one with NZ due to his descent but would take this case to the highest court in Australia for them to decide.
The office of New Zealand Internal Affairs Minister Peter Dunne confirmed to Australian media that under New Zealand law, a child born to a New Zealand national is automatically given citizenship.Mr Joyce told Parliament that he would continue as Deputy PM since he got a legal advice that he has not breached any code of conduct.
Interestingly, just last month couple of senators Scott Ludlam and Larissa Waters were forced to resign after the row on their dual citizenship status. Two more senators Matt Canavan and Malcolm Roberts case were also pending before the court which will decide their fate.
Mr Joyce entered the Senate in 2005, where he served for eight years, before moving to the lower House of Representatives in 2013.
“Needless to say, I was shocked about this,” he said further adding “Neither I, nor my parents have ever had any reason to believe I may be a citizen of another country.”
