After a petition was filed in the Orissa High Court alleging that Biju Janata Dal (BJD) had received dubious funding during the 2014 Lok Sabha and assembly elections, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said that the allegations are baseless. He said that the charges made against the party are false and fabricated. He said that it is an attempt to malign the party’s image by forces that are working to destabilize the BJD government in Odisha. Talking to the media about the petition filed in the High Court, Patnaik said, “All the allegations are malicious, fabricated and false. If needed, we will take legal action.”
After the petition was filed, the court had directed the Election Commission to look into the matter and dispose the case within a month. Speaking about the petition and the charges, State Bharatiya Janata Party Vice President Sameer Mohanty said that Patnaik was trying to divert attention by saying that BJD will employ legal recourse in the matter. Mohanty also said that the dubious funds deposited in BJD’s bank account could have been the commission received from chit fund companies that have cheated lakhs of investors in Odisha. Mohanty said that the state BJP would take the matter to the Election Commission, the Enforcement Directorate and the Income Tax Department to ensure proper investigation in the case.
