Soon after Asaduddin Owaisi, chief of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), came out in support of triple talaq, several counter statements were issued by those opposing his views. The most interesting reaction came from BJP’s Subramanian Swamy who said that Owaisi’s statement is disrespect for Muslim women.
Swamy said that although Owaisi is an educated person, he has a tendency to hide facts, something that he uses to fool people. Swami further said that as per Article 14 of the Indian constitution, everyone deserves to be treated equally. As such, the practice of triple talaq is against basic human rights and disrespect to Muslim women.
It may be recalled that earlier Owaisi had come out in support of triple talaq and talked about its similarity with Jallikattu, a matter of faith. “In Tamil Nadu, people protested in lakhs to fight for their tradition. Modi had to bow in front of them. Are we any less than them? We also have our own culture. We will marry and divorce the way we want to. Nobody should direct us what we should do,” Owaisi had said. Swamy reacted to this also by saying that the ban on Jallikattu was imposed by the UPA government and the present government has actually lifted the ban through an ordinance.
