In a significant change of political strategy, it is being expected that the newly elected interim Prime Minister of Pakistan Shahid Khaqan Abbasi may continue to hold the post for another 10 months. It may be recalled that earlier, ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif wanted his younger brother Shahbaz Sharif to become the prime minister of Pakistan after 45 days. Abbasi was to function as the interim prime minister for 45 days, during which time Shahbaz would have been elected from Sharif’s vacant seat in Lahore to join the national assembly. However, now a change of plan is expected and experts are saying that Abbasi may continue for 10 months, which essentially is the remaining 10-month tenure of PML-N.
Nawaz Sharif is currently holding a high-level meeting to discuss the change in the political strategy. It may be recalled that Sharif’s brother Shahbaz is the chief minister of Punjab province and top political leaders said that if he shifts to the center, it may create a leadership vacuum in the Punjab province. The large Punjab province is extremely important for PML-N and it does not want an inexperienced person to head the large province. “The PML-N legislators including Punjab law minister Rana Sanaullah have conveyed to Sharif that it will not be a wise move to elevate Shahbaz in the Centre as there will be no experience hand in the party to run the largest province in his absence,” a senior PML-N leader said.
