Truly speaking, the Bollywood horror scene has been missing its spooks for quite some time now. It’s true that there have been numerous horror movies in the recent past, but none of it could really claim to thrill the audience. Pari changes that trend, as it has turned out to be an intelligently designed horror film that is guaranteed to scare you to the bone. The plot is macabre and you get to experience the devil in its true colors, one that is unstoppable, brutal, unforgiving and indescribable. Pari also gets to see a top actor playing a lead role in a horror movie, which is a welcome break from earlier trends.
Pari catches up on the life of Arnab (Parambrata Chatterjee), who saves Ruksana (Anushka Sharma) when she is found mysteriously in a traumatized condition in an isolated forest. When Arnab comes to know that Ruksana has nowhere to go, he brings her home and lets her live there. Arnab thinks that he has done a good deed, but he has no clue about who Ruksana really is and what she plans to do. When the reality finally dawns on Arnab, it may be too late for him to respond in a safe manner. Will he become a part of the devil’s machinations or is there something about Arnab himself that may add a new twist to the movie?
What works for Pari is that it has been designed with intelligence and an attention to detail. The usual formula of jump scares, haunting background music, and dramatic scenes of being possessed have been intelligently replaced with the sound of eerie silence, melancholic music and an ever-present mist of paranoia and dread. Lead actors Anushka Sharma, Parambrata Chatterjee and Rajat Kapoor have delivered excellent performances, as they add to the dread without being hammy. The art direction also deserves credit, as the chosen sights and scenes are designed to chill your bones. The spooky roads, lonely houses, macabre rain, shadowy curtains, and flickering lights in the wide darkness are programmed to send shivers down your spine.
If you like horror, Pari would definitely qualify as a must-watch. It is one of the best mysterious and suspenseful creepy thrillers to have hit the screens in recent years.
