As per the parliamentary panel, vacancies in the higher levels have touched to alarming height. About 1,470 IAS officers are falling short as on 1st January 2016. This shortage has significantly affected Centre and in state governments governance both.
Parliamentary standing committee mentioned that shortage of IAS officers is recurrent problem since year 1951 and gradually at this present time it has touched to an alarming height. Against 6396 positions of IAS, only 4,926 officers are on job. This shortfall is more than 20%. Panel suggested filling up the vacancies at earliest.
It was also said that it is gradual process and in case when maximum officers are inducted at once then also it would create problem in cadre management.
