New Delhi, 07 March 2015: Starting the tournament on a winning note, Poland defeated Thailand 4-1 in the FIH Hockey World League Round 2 (Women) being played at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, New Delhi.
The first quarter of the match saw Poland dominating the game by continuously penetrating Thailand’s half, as they managed to secure a penalty corner opportunity in the very seventh minute of the game and Captain Marlena Rybacha made no mistake in converting it into a goal to take a 1-0 lead.
The second quarter of the match witnessed a much tougher fight coming in from both the sides, as it was packed with attacks and counter-attacks. Both Poland and Thailand were at their best with their respective defence line-up, as both prevented each other from scoring and the second quarter went dry on goals.
Thailand was seen putting extra efforts in the third quarter of the game to level the scores with Poland as they tried to create goal scoring opportunities for themselves on many occasions but were restricted by Poland. It was Poland’s Magdalena Zagajska who sneaked in a field goal in the 38th minute to take the lead for her team further ahead to 2-0 in game. On the other hand, Thailand’s efforts proved to be fruitful for them in the 45th minute of the match, when Kornkanok Sanpoung fired in a field goal and reduced the score to 2-1 by the end of the third quarter.
In the very opening minute of the fourth quarter Poland increased their lead to 3-1 when they secured a penalty corner opportunity in the 46th minute and Joanna Wieloch successfully converted it into a goal. With just two minutes to the final whistle to be blown, Marlena Rybacha proved her proficient captaincy and scored the 4th goal for Poland in the 58th minute through a penalty corner conversion. With the brilliant display of stick skills, Poland outwits Thailand 4-1 and won the match.
Post the loss suffered in the opening match, Thailand captain Boonta Duangurai said, “We played well today but made some mistakes in passing the ball. I am confident that the team will communicate better in the next match. Our target is to be on top three or two positions.”
Excited on winning their first match, Poland Coach Krzysztof Rachwalski said, “The team seemed little nervous in the first half of the game where the problem was with the decision making inside the circle, but we had an early advantage and dominated the game throughout. I am proud of the team to have won the very first match in tournament and hopefully we have a chance to stay in the top two positions.”
