Amidst the deteriorating law and order situation in Darjeeling, a police officer was stabbed today by protestors. The protest turned violent since a lawmaker’s son, Vikram Rai, head of GJM’s media cell, was arrested and a house of a senior Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) leader, Binay Tamang, was allegedly vandalized last night. As protestors clashed with security personnel, there were injuries on both sides. In the clashes, a police officer was stabbed by protestors. The protestors were extremely violent and were throwing stones, bottles and even petrol bombs on security personnel.
Since the situation was getting out of control, security forces were forced to lathi-charge and use teargas shells. Responding to the violent protests, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee expressed her disappointment and said that GJM has now started using insurgency groups to foment trouble. Banerjee also said that the violence and protests in Darjeeling is part of a deep-rooted conspiracy.
It may be recalled that the Army has already been called to take control of the situation. All security forces deployed in Darjeeling have been put on high alert and flag marches are being conducted in various parts of the hill city.
