Police Stations lack basic facilities; 400 without phones: BPR&D Report

Reflecting the sad state of affairs of Police Stations in the country, a recent report prepared by the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) has revealed that many police stations lack basic facilities such as police vehicles, telephone lines, and wireless systems.


It comes as a shock to many to know that these essential facilities which are critical for fighting crime and maintaining law & order are missing from several police stations. The report says that there are 15,555 police stations in the country, out of which, 188 police stations do not have a single vehicle, 402 are functioning without a telephone and 134 without wireless communication systems. 65 police stations neither have telephones nor wireless sets.

The report further states that Manipur has 43 police stations that are functioning without telephone lines and wireless systems. In Chhattisgarh, 161 police stations don’t have even a single vehicle. In Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya and Manipur, the number of police stations without telephone is 111, 67, and 67 respectively. In Uttar Pradesh, 51 police stations lack telephone lines and 17 do not have wireless sets. Home Ministry officials are aware of such issues and have been trying to find a solution in collaboration with the respective State governments.
