The physical police verification for passports is one cumbersome thing which everyone wants to avoid.
Narendra Modi government planning to replace physical verification of the applicant’s antecedents with online verification using a link to the newly-created national database on crimes of criminals.
Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi said the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems Project (CCTNS) will connect with the passport service of the Ministry of External Affairs and in a year it is expected to replace the physical verification with the online one.
Rajiv Mehrishi told , “Police in some states are already using CCTNS for passport credentials. Police will be given hand-held devices to go to an applicant’s address and his or her details will be uploaded with the network. It will minimise contact with police and reduce time.”
Home minister Rajnath Singh launched digital portal under CCTNS project which aims to create a national database of criminals and also connect 15,398 police stations in the country with each other.
During this event, Mehrishi announced the government plan about digitalize physical police verification.
When asked about the safety he said that the possibility of hacking is always there but special measures are being taken to get it protected and the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre has been roped in for the task.
This portal also helps citizens to register a complaint online and request for antecedent verification.
