In an embarrassment for the state government in Maharashtra, BJP leader and medical education minister Girish Mahajan is said to have attended the wedding of Dawood’s niece. The wedding was held in Nashik. The minister came along with 10 cops, which led to even more controversy. One of the cops was an assistant police commissioner, whereas the rest were inspectors. Other BJP leaders were also present at the wedding such as Devyani Farande, Balasaheb Sanap and Seeema Hiray, Nashik mayor Ranjana Bhanasi and deputy mayor Prathamesh Gite (both of the BJP) and a section of local municipal councilors. What most find surprising is the fact that Girish Mahajan is considered to be close to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Meanwhile, an inquiry has been ordered by Nashik police commissioner Ravindra Singhal in regards to the presence of cops at the wedding. The inquiry committee has already recorded the statements of the cops who had attended the wedding. However, Mahajan said that he was not aware of the links that the family had with fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim. He said that he went there on the personal invitation of a local Muslim community leader Shahar, who is a respected religious leader.
