President Ramnath Kovind on Monday declared rural Gujarat open defecation free and said that it was a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary.
He made the announcement at Kirti Mandir , the birth place of Mahatma.
“By achieving the goal of rural ODF status , Gujarat has paid true homage to Gandhiji”, said Kovind.
The president said cleanliness is not only responsibility for sanitation workers and government but a multi stake holder national movement.
“About 100 years ago, Gandhiji had tried to inculcate this by cleaning toilets himself. Achieving the goals of the Swachh Bharat Mission by October 2, 2019, will be an appropriate tribute to the Father of the Nation on his 150th birth anniversary,” he added.

At Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, people paid tribute by organising an all-faith prayer meeting.
Hundreds of people from the city and elsewhere thronged the ashram to mark the occasion.
