Presidential election: Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind is NDA candidate

The BJP proposed the name of Bihar governor Ram Nath Kovind as their candidate for presidential election.

71 year old Kovind is a Dalit leader from Kanpur.

He was born on October 1, 1945 in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur Dehat district.

He has been a member of Rajya Sabha for two terms –1994-2000 and 2000- 2006.

He has also been the national spokesperson of the BJP. Kovind assumed the charge as 36th Governor of Bihar in August 2015.

Kovind practised at both the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court for 16 years.

Amit Shah said “Ram Nath Govind always fought for the betterment of the Dalits and other backward castes”.

Reacting to the development, NDA ally at the centre, Shiv Sena said the BJP should have consulted its allies before naming the candidate.

Earlier today , BJP parliamentary board met to discuss the names for the presidential election.

PM Narendra Modi chaired the meeting, BJP national president Amit Shah and Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley, Venkaiah Naidu, Sushma Swaraj , Nitin Gadkari were among those in attendance.

Venkaiah Naidu and Rajnath Singh met opposition leaders to discuss the issue. However opposition parties said that BJP did not discuss any names with them.

A total of 50 nominators and 50 seconders are required for a candidate to stand in the election.
