Newspatrolling: The Election Commission said today that Presidential election will be held on July 17 and the results be declared on July 20. It may be recalled that the term of the current President Pranab Mukherjee is set to expire on July 24. Before this, the new President has to be elected. Providing further details about the Presidential elections, the Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi said that the last date for filing nominations is June 28. The verification of the nominations will be done on June 29 and candidates can withdraw their nomination by July 1. “The date on which polling will be held, if required, is July 17. Counting, if required, will be done on July 20,” Zaidi said.
It may be recalled that ordinary people cannot participate in the Presidential elections. The votes for choosing the President of India are cast only by elected members of the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha and state assemblies including assemblies of Delhi and Puducherry. The Presidential election this time is going to be a lot more tough since most opposition parties have come together to confront the BJP-led NDA government. It remains to be seen if BJP can get the required support to nominate and elect a favorable President of their choice.
