Karnataka police DIG D Roopa, who had pointed to the preferential treatment being given to AIADMK leader VK Sasikala, has been awarded with the President’s Medal. The award is given for meritorious service. The President’s Medal was given to Roopa during a function organized at Raj Bhavan in Bengaluru. The award was given to DIG Roopa, the top cop in the state, by Governor Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala. Earlier, she was also given the President’s Police Medal in 2016. Roopa was earlier serving as the DIG (Prisons), and at that time she had prepared a report which revealed that certain prisoners were being given preferential treatment inside the jail. She had submitted a report to Home Department and Director General of Police for Prison Department H N Sathyanarayan Rao, wherein she had stated that several prisoners including Sasikala were being given preferential treatment in Bengaluru prison.
Roopa’s statement and report had created a huge controversy at that time and several political groups had asked her to apologize for her statements. Even the state government had not believed in her statement and had dismissed her report. The state government had said that there was no truth in the claims that Sasikala and her relative Elavarasi have been given preferential treatment at the prison. The state government had even issued notices against Roopa, in which it was mentioned that she had violated the service rules and was guilty of going public over allegations against other senior officials.
