Nearly five months after a rape case in Nerul’s MGM School had sparked widespread protests, it has been revealed in an inquiry report that the school’s principal, Savita Gulati, had tried to hush up the matter through intimidation and compensation. The principal had offered to give Rs 50 lakh to the victim’s mother to take back the case and also warned her that she had connections with powerful people. Gulati was trying to protect the teacher Harishankar Shukla, who has been accused of raping a student and sexually abusing several others. His crimes came to light when a 13-year-old from Std VII of the school got pregnant. It was alleged that Shukla had raped up on several occasions between April and August last year.
Following the findings of the inquiry report, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a show cause notice to the school. The notice provides all the details of how Gulati tried to hush up the matter and interfere with the investigations. Even the classroom where the rape took place was modified so that it would become difficult for investigators to recreate the scene. It also destroyed evidence that could have been used against the accused. The school has to submit its reply within 15 days, based on which, further action will be taken against the school.
