Violence erupted today after the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi and his wife Kasturba Gandhi at Rajghat area was dismantled by the district administration and temporarily relocated to a nearby place which did not go own well with Gandhi’s supporters which had triggered protests.
The development came hours before Narmada Bachao Andolan leader Medha Patkar was to start her indefinite fast demanding rehabilitation of people displaced in Madhya Pradesh due to closure of Sardar Sarovar dam’s gates last month. The district administration has to take the step of relocating the memorial after it was about to get submerged due to the closure of gates of Narmada Dam in Gujarat.
Activist Hinshi Singh said urns containing the ash of Gandhi, Kasturba and Mahatma’s secretary Mahadev Desai were taken away from the memorial early morning and the news was not made public due to confidential nature but was somehow leaked.
Confusion prevailed as to when the urns were taken from Rajghat. Since the protestors did not allow the urns to be taken elsewhere, it was shifted to a temporary place in Kurki area by afternoon. The District Collector Tejaswi S Naik said a grand memorial of the Mahatma, Kasturba and Desai would be constructed after a final call is being derived from the committee that was set up specifically for this.
It is yet to be ascertained as to who gave the orders and whether there was any political motive behind it.
