Pune-based businessman, Datta Phuge, who got glare of publicity after he was photographed in pure gold shirt a few years ago and was christened as ‘Gold man’, was allegedly battered to death in front of his son in the early hours of Friday.
Maharashtra police so far have arrested five persons including Phuge’s nephew in connection to the brutal murder.
According to police, 48-year-old Phuge, a National Congress Party member was allegedly pulled out his car by at least a dozen of men. He was attacked with batons, sticks, stabbed by a sickle and pounded with huge stones.
According to the statement given by the victim’s son, 22-year-old Shubam, while returning home he saw his father being attacked by at least a dozen of person and identifies several of the attackers.
“The attackers came and looked into my car when I stopped but did not do anything. I know around seven to eight people involved in the attack,” said Shubam to the police during questioning.
According to police at the time of the incident the victim’s bodyguard were not with him who are generally seen 24hrs hovering around him.
Phuge’s wife is an NCP corporator, who has a money-lending and chit fund business. Phuge a few months back had been alleged of short-changing his customers.
Phuge had come to fame after his image got viral wearing a 22 carat gold shirt worth over Rs.1crore, with embedded crystal buttons and matching gold belts. The shirt has been billed as the world’s most expensive shirt.
The Pune police believe the attack could be a result of some financial dispute among partners or his customers. However senior officials said that they are probing the incident in all possible angles.
