Every time New Year’s comes around, there is one resolution that everyone seems to agree on and that is losing weight! We all know December tends to be a month of indulging and enjoying the finer delicacies of life, but if we aren’t too careful when January comes around, we might have added on more pounds than we thought!
So, instead of waiting until January to arrive, I decided to find the best apps for losing weight, so I can get a head start on my New Year’s resolution and hopefully reduce my traditional holiday gains (and no – not muscle gains).
I certainly am on board for a healthy lifestyle, and if there is an easy way to stay on track while still enjoying delicious food, I am all for it! So, I tested some of the apps on their list and selected my top 4 favorites. The first group of apps I selected is great for keeping track of your weight loss. The second group of apps is great for keeping a log of what you eat during your weight loss journey.
Apps for Tracking Your Weight Loss
Losing weight takes time, so the best way to gauge how your weight loss journey is going is by keeping track of how your weight changes over time. The first group of apps I selected will help you do exactly that, as you can easily keep track of your weight with just a few taps.
Apps: Pedometer, Step Counter & Weight Loss Tracker App, Weight Loss Tracker, BMI
My first pick is Pedometer, Step Counter & Weight Loss Tracker App. What I like about it is that not only can you keep track of your weight loss progress, but you can also keep track of how many calories you have burned by walking or running. I also like the variety of exercise challenges, as they really help for finding that extra motivation on those particularly lazy days. The only drawback I found is that there is no option for increasing text size, so it can be a little hard to view how many steps you’ve taken while you are walking or running. On the plus side, there is a zoom tool you can use if you really need to check up on your exercise progress mid-walk or mid-run!
My second pick is Weight Loss Tracker, BMI. I found to be a great choice if you need some help getting started on your weight loss journey. In particular, I like that you can quickly find out whether you are at a healthy weight, by entering your weight, height, age, and other information. A weight loss calculator instantly determines your BMI and gives you a detailed analysis of your physical constitution. Unlike my previous pick, I didn’t find any option for keeping track of exercise or calories burned. However, I found the weight loss tracking features alone to be highly valuable and insightful.
Weight Loss Apps for Tracking What you Eat
Unfortunately losing weight is not just about exercise, as it is also about keeping an eye on what you eat. However, that can be easier said than done, with so many different food types that can greatly vary in calories. To make your weight loss journey easier, my second group of weight loss apps will also keep track of what you eat, so you can take control over your diet and shed those pounds fast.
Apps: MyFitnessPal, My Diet Coach
My third pick is MyFitnessPal. I really like how you can keep track of your weight, exercise, the food you eat and even how close you are to your fitness goals, all in one place! I found it easy to set up my profile, and by simply specifying if you want to lose weight, gain muscle or maintain weight, you can get valuable tips and tricks to reach your goals. I also liked how easy it is to log the food you eat, as you can easily scan food barcodes end even log meals from your favorite restaurants. Although I was particularly impressed with MyFitnessPal’s huge food database, you probably won’t find your grandmother’s homemade macaroni and cheese recipe. However, I found it easy to input my own recipes, and the nutritional information is automatically calculated!
My fourth pick is My Diet Coach. I found this to be a great choice if you are looking for a fun way to lose weight. Not only can you track your weight loss and the food you eat, but you also get points and rewards by completing weight loss and fitness challenges! I found the challenges to be super fun to complete, which is great if you want to improve your eating and exercise habits. Although I particularly love the reward system, I was slightly disappointed that the interface and avatar prizes are mostly designed with women in mind. In any case, I found the variety of fitness features to be extremely useful, regardless of gender. So, hopefully, the developers will include male avatar rewards in future updates!
So, these are my top 4 favorite weight loss apps. My personal favorite is MyFitnessPal, as I have found valuable insight to be really helpful in improving my eating habits. I hope you find these weight loss apps as great as I do.
As a final tip, if you need more resources for weight loss apps, I suggest checking out a list I used for finding the reviewed apps.
