Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi launched Karnataka government’s flagship program ‘Indira Canteen’ in Bengaluru on Wednesday.
Rahul said he is “proud” of the fact that the canteen will provide breakfast for Rs 5 and meals at Rs 10. “Nobody in Bengaluru should go hungry,” he said.
“I am proud that it is a Congress government that conceptualized this canteen,” Rahul added.
101 outlets of 198 planned by the BBMP would also start operating on Wednesday.
Rest of the 97 will be opened on October 2 to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said.
Rahul said that Congress is planning to open more Indira Canteens across Karnataka, where the Assembly elections are due next year.
The Congress is not the first party to think of a canteen dedicated to the poor.
That was started by late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa by her chain of Amma canteens across Tamil Nadu.
