Robert Pious, one of the persons convicted in the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, has requested the Tamil Nadu government and DG Prisons to grant him mercy killing. It may be recalled that Pious has been languishing in jail for the last 27 years. In his request seeking mercy killing, Pious said that due to the long time spent in jail, he has lost all interest in life and he has no purpose left to continue life. An excerpt from the letter reads, “I’ve been in prison for more than 27 years now…I can understand the intention of the government and as none of my family member have come to see me, I don’t find anymore purpose in life.”
Robert Pious is currently lodged in Puzhal Central Prison in Chennai. He said that one of the judges in 1999 had said that he was innocent, but yet he is in jail. He said that now his chances of getting out of jail are very rare, which is why he should be given the possibility for mercy killing. A Sri Lankan, Robert Pious is alleged to be a member of the LTTE commando unit. After he was arrested, he had confessed that he was among those involved in planning the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi.
